What is Vermeil?

Right now, vermeil (pronounced ver-mey) jewelry is one of the hottest trends as it strikes the perfect balance between quality and value, also known as "silver gilt". The composition, thickness, and base metal of a gold vermeil piece of jewelry determine its quality. According to the US industry standards, the gold portion must be at least 10 karats and 2.5 microns thick, in order to be considered Gold Vermeil.

The vermeil pieces that you will find available at Porpe Artifacts are

  • made from Recycled Sterling Silver

  • plated with 24K Gold with 2.5 microns thickness

(*) The vermeil plating process is carried out by expert plating business based in the US, in order to ensure the highest quality on materials and process.

With basic care, you can keep a vermeil jewel in pristine condition for a long time. The plating can also be reapplied every few years so that it remains as good as new.

You always need to consider your budget when buying a piece of jewelry. Obviously, you want to buy a quality product, but you also want to avoid spending more than you can afford. That being said, if you are interested in buying gold jewelry, gold vermeil is a fantastic option to consider, as it is one of the best alternatives to solid gold jewelry.

How to care for your Vermeil Jewelry

Gold Vermeil has a much longer lifespan than other gold-plated options. To maintain the stunning Gold Vermeil finish for as long as possible, follow these simple tips:

  • When you wash your hands, take a shower, or go swimming, remove jewelry because water and chemicals (especially chlorine) can affect the longevity of gold plating. Especially important for rings, since we use our hands for everything we do, they are subjected to more wear and tear than other jewelry types.

  • When getting ready, wear your Gold Vermeil jewelry last so that makeup, perfume, hairspray, and lotions won't affect its beauty or shine.

  • You can use a cotton pad to gently rub your jewelry to clean and restore its shine. Avoid using polishing agents or abrasive liquids as these will wear away the gold layers.

  •  If not worn, store your jewelry in the beautiful cotton bag provided.
