  • Making Jewelry: An introduction to Wax Modeling – 2 day workshop Saturday & Sunday June 1st & 2nd 1:30-5:30 pm

Explore wax modeling as a method for creating a piece of metal jewelry. At the end of this two-day workshop you will select your best wax model design to be sent for casting in either Sterling Silver or Brass to later take home as your own special jewelry piece. One of the processes of designing jewelry is to carve the design first on wax before making the form. Wax is a very malleable and beautiful material to work with and allows the artist to make either simple or complex forms. Students will sculpt soft wax to produce organic shapes; carve the design on sheets of hard wax; solder different wax pieces together; and receive ongoing instruction. As tools and materials are introduced, students start simply, then add details and refine work for casting. I will do the final finishing (e.g. solder posts to earrings) to student specifications.

All the wax materials and tools will be provided.

  • Jewelry Design – Using commercial Materials and Findings, Friday May 24th 4:30-8:00 pm

In this workshop you will make unique fashion jewelry using materials such as beading wire, crimps, small beads, gold or silver elements, pearls, tubes etc. Experiment with the materials in alternative, creative ways to make unique jewelry. Basic patterns, tips and tricks will be demonstrated for you to create your own pattern or design. Once you select the color of the beading wire, beads and findings you can start creating! There will be plenty of time to explore materials, and complete a unique piece of jewelry to take home with you. This is definitely a fun workshop to challenge your creativity,

All the materials and tools will be provided.

Jewelry Making class

I always had a love for art and I was always jealous of the people who could do it. When I was 30 years old I decided to enroll on an evening painting class as I was working in the corporate world.  That was almost 17 years ago, and since then I haven’t stopped.

Introducing yourself to a new skill can help you increase your comfort zone limits and open the doors to creativity that you never knew you had. Jewelry more specifically offers a lot of opportunities during the design and making process to help you do that.

The material

When you are first introduced to the material you need to learn its limits, and you can only do that by the “hands-on” approach. Hands on means doing mistakes and continue until you have the result you want.

The Use

The material is there so you need to think  what this jewelry will be used for: is it gonna be a pair of earrings, a ring, a necklace, a bracelet or maybe a pin? Each of the uses imposes new restrictions in your design.

The Design

The material is there, you know what you want your jewel to be used for, so you need to think about the design. Is it gonna be geometric, minimal, or maybe a theme inspired by nature? This is totally up to you because the design is an expression of your own experiences and images, you have in your mind.

By combining  the material, use, and design, there will be a few challenges on the way that you need to overcome in order to materialize what you have in mind. I know that when you read it, it looks complicating but the mind finds beautiful ways to work on all of these things and as you learn and train yourself on your skill, gradually you will push your comfort limits and you will be more creative!

Materials Guide & Tips

A lot of our customers have been asking about the materials that we are using, how they can make it last longer.

In Porpe Artifacts we use metal made in the USA, recycled metal whenever possible and try to source everything in a conscientious way. We recycle all our metal scraps – we are now preparing a small collection from scrap metal. We try to support other small businesses and that is why we source our supplies locally as much as we can. Our casting and plating is done by experienced business based in the US.

Mother, Mom, Mum, Mama…

“Who was the first mother?”  This is the question that my 3-year-old boy asked me in agony, on a Sunday evening. He was trying to find out how did everything started. In his baby mind he knew, that everyone, everything must have a mother, so who was her? I started looking for suitable stories and the first thing that came up was the Ancient Greek myth about “Gaia”.

The myth reveals that “The first mother and the first ever Greek God was actually a Goddess, her name was Gaia or Mother Earth. She created herself out of primordial chaos. From her fertile womb all life sprang. Mother Earth is always working to achieve and maintain harmony, wholeness and balance within the environment.  She heals, nurtures, and supports all life in this planet and ultimately all life and health depend on her. In time Mother Earth heals all ills”.

After reading this, different questions popped into my mind: Is mother a title because you give birth? What about the women who act like mothers and sometimes even more? who raise adopted children? who support kids? who inspire kids or who just love kids? On top of all these, as a mother I always wonder if there is a right way to show love, achieve and maintain harmony?

One mother picks up her crying baby and rocks him back and forth; another turns away, leaving the baby to cry himself/herself out. In some cultures, they believe that harmony and balance is achieved by a scheduled routine, and by following the safety rules, while in other cultures this may differ.  In some countries it’s fine to leave your baby out in the cold to have a nap (if it is warm dressed), while in others if it is not sunny enough, kids won’t be allowed to go outside out of fear of catching a cold. Like a babel tower, our cultures similar to our languages are so unlike. As a mother, I couldn’t be able to answer if one way is better than the other, I think no one can.  What I do find right though, is the essence of what the ancient Greek myth reveals: a mother is more than a name or a title. A mother is a source of harmony, wholeness, balance, and healing. Life depends on her because she gives life and most important she gives unconditional love, in her own beautiful way.

Mother is the precious person in our life who will give you her essence just because she loves you!

Dedicated to all the special persons who raise, support, inspire and love kids every day, unconditionally!

Conveying cultural values…

Very often we will browse the internet reading about jewelry exhibitions  around the world. It is so nice to read about new artists and designers trying to push the medium they use into other levels. While we were doing that we found an article about an exhibition called “Hidden Curriculum” that takes place during the Munich Jewelry Week:

“…According to history, Jewelry serves as a primary means of conveying cultural values. Traditionally, jewels were seen as sacred and precious; however, from the beginning of the 20th century, jewelry has started to be objectified. Jewelry is a product of non-verbal communication as a result of all human social interactions.

The process, through which a piece of jewelry is created, is totally connected with the cultural and social background of each jewelry artist. From the selection of materials to the final product, it is needed that all different possibilities and perspectives of this act to be explored…”

It is true that jewelry is ..”a non-verbal communication..” and that is why we believe that jewelry is more than an accessory because they reveal something about you when you choose what kind of jewel you will wear.  If you select a handmade jewel try to see beyond the design, ask about the artist and his/her process  and maybe you will discover why you were drawn into it. A jewel conveys the cultural values, experiences and deeper needs of expression of the artist and if you feel connected to a piece of a handmade jewel then there is definitely a deeper connection that also reveals something about you, too.

Love can be.. Eros, Philia, Agape…

According to the Ancient Greek philosophers there are three different types of love:

Eros  is the type of love that constitutes a passionate intense desire for someone. In Plato’s writing eros is a common desire that seeks transcendental beauty.

Philia entails a fondness and appreciation of the other. Aristotle elaborates that the proper basis of philia is sharing dispositions, bear no grudges, mutual admiration and so on…

Agape refers to the paternal love of God for humans and humans for God but extended to include brotherly love of all humanity. Agape draws on elements from eros and philia in that it seeks a perfect kind of love.

Enjoy this day and everyday, whatever kind of love you are celebrating…

Jewel Your self this special day (inside and out!!)

All you need is love….

Even though we believe that love should be celebrated every day, we also believe that Valentine’s day is a great opportunity to take a short break from our busy lives and do something special with our other half!

As I was looking for ideas for Valentines’ day I came across the following article which I really wanted to share with you.  The beginning of the article really made me laugh.. ..

“…In city where a new restaurant seemingly opens every week, it’s not hard to find a great spot for date night in Seattle. The other part of the equation, deciding what to wear for the occasion, might elude some of the most well-intentioned Seattleites who might cringe at the idea of trading rain boots for dress shoes for a night on the town with their better half…” Read more …Valentines day style tips and ideas from 6 Seattle bloggers

Jewel Yourself…

“Jewel Yourself”, started when we watched a short video from different women talking about being.. Being kinder to others, Being lost in the moment, Being at peace with the world and with our self, Being kinder to yourself… In our everyday lives we are busy with living instead of being. You know how our minds work, one moment you read something inspiring and you think ” Yes, I should do that”… and the next moment your are lost on your daily activities.

There are lots of ready mantras that we could use but we needed something that will be personal, will work as a sign, and will be easy associated to an object. So, the word “Jewel” came to us. Obviously because we love jewels so much and, because we love the meaning of the word “jewel” which according to the dictionary it is also “a person resembling a jewel in preciousness, brilliance, etc…” ( Then the word “yourself” just paired.

For us the phrase “Jewel Yourself” goes beyond the beautification of the body and includes the beautification of the soul. That is how this little phrase captured our minds and hearts and became our everyday moto: to “Jewel Ourselves”.

We hope that through our “Jewel Yourself” series of articles, videos, books and photos that inspired us,  you will be inspired, too, and “Jewel Yourself” every single day.

With love

from Mina & Vicky
